Task 1 - Different Type's of Creative Project Briefs

Contractual

“A contractual brief is a type of brief or contract where a media company is employed by the client in order to complete a project within the brief which is set to specific guidelines which the media company must follow. It will be very important for the media company to follow these guidelines and do exactly what the client states within the brief, if they fail to do so this can result in a breach of contract and the company could face legal actions.”

A contract basically is where a company is hired and held to certain set of guidelines in order to complete a project that a parent company is unable to complete on its own. For a Contract to take effect both parties must sign said contract with personal signatures to solidify the deal.  The signing of a contract obligates by law for every promise made too be honoured, for example if said parent company offer a certain amount of money and contractually it is agreed by law they must pay you. A disadvantage of using contractual agreements by law you must follow and complete everything stated. So there is no room for flexibility in this type of work.

Communication – Communication in a contractual sense is shown wen both parties meet to discuss the finalisation of the contract and ultimately signing it as without communication at this stage the contract maybe biased and or un fair on one party.

Time Management – In a contractual situation the participant must show good time management skills as in the contract it may be stated that certain things must be completed for a certain time.
Technical Skills – Having Technical skills can be a great asset while working under contract, As this can allow for you to improve and also to learn new skills that ca help you later on.

Career Progression – Again linking too gaining news kills a contractual agreement can also help with the clients progression as the new skills learnt and being shown they can work under contract are great skills too have and will make them more desirable for other companies.

Commission

“This brief is where a large media company will employ an other independent media company to create and produce the product for them, and after the product has been made the larger company may go on to be use the product for an external client who will pay the independent media company for making the product and they could even get a cut of the royalties too. The brief is not negotiated between the company and the client, however is negotiated between the two media companies.”

Overall a commission is where multiple companies meet too come to a final decision on a project.  So it is mainly used for coming to terms with fair negotiations that benefit both parties if this fails no deal can be finalized. However most commissions are done over the telephone tis makes the process much simpler for each party.

Communication – The majority of commissions is about communication between two companies, This helps too single out certain problems and handle them accordingly.

Time Management – Throughout the discussions involved will be deadlines and such and time scales for the completion of the work. This allows for client too use time management to achieve these goals.

Technical Skills – Talking too the client would give valuable communication experience and hep with the social interaction needed during a commission.

Career Progression – The skills required from helping come to terms with the client can be valuable, this will increase their chance at finding work As they will have the skills to negotiate terms of work.

Negotiated
'This type of brief will be brought up if the co-operative brief given to the two of more media companies that are competing the project have any issues between them selves about the brief or anything they would like to clear up with the client. Through the negotiations the brief can then be changed in order to suite every party taking part in the production. This could be anything from changing the appearance of the product to changing the products content as well as keeping it to the guidelines set in the brief.'

The negotiated brief is where if multiple companies disagree o certain things. Such as the deadline then the companies will sit down together and negotiate new terms that will suit all the parties involved.

Communication- Communication is key with renegotiating new terms because all parties need to understand what he issue is with the first brief.

Time management- This is important because this could be the reason that the brief has to be renegotiated. This is because the client could feel that the company did not give them enough time to complete the project.

Technical skills- Skills needed would be to have god negotiating skills to get the new brief that suits everyone involved.

Career progression- This would progress your career because it shows you can communicate about issues with the original brief, and companies may think this is a good feature to have because then they know if they have

Tender
'This is where a client will advertise their brief and a production company will bring together a proposal that they will pitch to the client, there could be multiple pitches to the client from many different companies, so the client will then get the chance to choose the proposal that they think best suits their brief and offer the job to that production company.'

A tender brief is where multiple companies will pitch there ideas to a client. Then then client will have the opportunity to pick one project from many different projects. The client will pick a project that will fit to their brief and there set of skills.

Communication- Communication is key for this brief because you have to be able to pitch your project to the client and also communicate with the different companies what type of wok you are looking for.

Time management- This is key because the companies need to know how long it will take to decided on which job to take. The client will also have a set time to complete the chosen project.

Technical skills- Skills that are needed for this brief is to understand which project could be the best for the skills that you have.

Career progression- This could progress your career because this can improve your relations with multiple companies and then if they have any other work they would hire you again if you do a good job.

Formal
'This this where a media company is given a brief by the client which outlines the product which they are wanting to be made. This brief is very open and only gives enough information to be able to produce the product, any issues or information that the media company would like to go over can be discussed during the negotiations with the client. Both the client and the company employed by them will formally agree on the project and the brief but it can not always be legally binding.'
http://creativemediaatjt.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/formal-brief.html

A formal brief is where the company gives you enough information on the brief for you too make the product. But you can negotiate with the Company to change things in the brief that you think need changing.

Communication- Communication is key for a formal brief because both companies need to understand what each other want from this brief.

Time management- This is a legally binding contract so breaking the deadline would break the contract and not look good for the company you work for.

Technical skills- For technical skills you need to have clear speaking skills to help negotiate the contract.

Career progression- If you complete the contract correctly and the company liked the work you did then the company could possibly come back to you in the future and give you more work.

Co-operative
'Within this type of brief there are usually two or more companies that are hired by the client to work to the brief they have written for the specific project they re wanting to be completed. After both companies have received the brief they can then proceed to work together to produce the product. If there is a disagreement or conflict in ideas there can be a negotiated brief in order to resolve these issues.'
http://creativemediaatjt.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/co-operative-brief.html

This brief is where multiple companies work together on the same/similar briefs but they have to work together on the same project.

Communication- Communication is key to understand what each company is going to be completing what on the project brief.

Time management- Time management stops companies from falling behind and making other companies have to wait or complete the work for other companies.

Technical skills- For technical skills this only helps towards your professional area. As the other companies will be focusing on the other aspects of the brief.

Career progression- By completing this brief you could open doors with other companies by hopefully gaining more work with these companies in the future.

Informal
'An informal brief is not documented and is usually of the verbal kind. It is where the client and the company which they have employed simply discuss the requirements for the product they will be making and ultimately agree upon the project.'
http://creativemediaatjt.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/informal-brief.html

An informal brief is where nothing is really documented and the contract is a verbal contract. This is where the two companies discuss what needs to be created, and then go away and create what they need too.

Communication- Communication is important because nothing is documented and so the companies need to clearly express what they need too.

Time management- If one company misses the deadline there is no legal action that can be taken because there is no documented evidence of the deadline date.

Technical skills- This type of brief is very open on what you can work on as it is very informal and you could create your own ideas and then compare them said ideas.

Career progression- The only career progression in this is by the company you with/for endorse you to other companies.

Competition
'This is where a client can put their brief out so it can be accessed by all of the different production companies that are participating. It can sometimes been seen as a free competition as each production company will complete the brief and the client can then judge which company has the best project and as an award they have it published.'
http://creativemediaatjt.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/competition-brief.html

This is a brief where the hiring company puts the brief out there to be accessed by anyone and completed by anyone. The company will then go away and decide which project was the best. They would then reward that company, and take the project.

Communication- There is little communication with this type of brief, this is because after the brief is completed then the companies do not communicate until the work is completed.

Time management- This is important because if you miss the deadline then your work will not get chosen and you will not be rewarded for that work.

Technical skills- This is important because the brief could have a variety on what skills needed to complete.

Career progression- This could help your progression because if your work gets chosen then you could get rehired by the company to complete more private work.
